Nepal’s New Interim PM: Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki Takes Charge
In a historic move for Nepal, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki swore in as the country’s interim Prime Minister on Friday, becoming the first woman to lead the Himalayan nation. This comes amid ongoing political turbulence, and experts are calling it a positive step forward.
Manjeev Puri, India’s former Ambassador to Nepal, praised Karki’s appointment during an interview with . He described it as unprecedented but a smart choice to fill the leadership vacuum. "It’s complicated—do you know any constitution that allows someone to step aside like this? It’s a negotiation, but I’m glad they’re picking a leader. You can’t have a political vacuum in Nepal," Puri said.
Puri highlighted Karki’s strong track record as a former Chief Justice. "She’s known as a straight shooter who fought corruption and championed human rights. She’s a senior figure who even studied at Banaras Hindu University (BHU). This feels like a fresh start to rebuild," he added. He also noted that President Ram Chandra Poudel, a veteran politician, is back in the spotlight, helping anchor the talks.
The Nepal Army seems to support this transition too, according to Puri. "I’m sure the army chief is backing it behind the scenes. Once there’s a Prime Minister in place, things can move forward legally and smoothly. It’s a welcome development," he said.
Looking ahead, Karki now faces the task of building a cabinet. Puri pointed out that Nepal isn’t a small nation—it needs a full team of ministers. "There will be negotiations between the young Gen Z leaders and the established political parties. The old guard hasn’t vanished; they’re still making their voices heard," he explained.
Nepal has battled political instability for years, but Puri remains optimistic. "They’ll need inclusive politics that addresses recent events—it’s tricky, but Nepalis are resilient. They master compromise and deal-making. First priority is stability, then tackling big issues like damaged buildings and property," he said.
This appointment marks a key moment in Nepal’s push for steady governance, with Karki’s anti-corruption legacy offering hope for change. As the nation watches, her leadership could pave the way for unity in these challenging times.
