Mount Everest, the world’s tallest peak, turned into a winter nightmare as a fierce blizzard slammed into its eastern slope over the weekend. The storm knocked nearly 1,000 hikers and trekkers off‑balance, forcing rescue crews into a race against time at 16,000 feet and higher.
The blizzard tore through Tibet on Friday, blowing snow so hard that it collapsed tents and left many supplies buried. Climbers who had been high on the mountain for days are now battling hypothermia and darkness. Rescue teams from Tibet’s Blue Sky Rescue have already evacuate about 350 stranded tourists, but hundreds of other adventurers remain trapped by the heavy snow.
In the wake of the chaos, the Tingri County Tourism Company has halted ticket sales to Everest, the 29,000‑foot Himalayan giant that draws climbers from around the globe each year. The trek has long been a popular challenge, but more than 300 people have lost their lives on the slope—especially above 26,000 feet where climbers call the “dead zone.”
The storm’s fury didn’t stop at the summit. In Nepal, the forces triggered landslides and flash floods that left at least 47 people dead. In India, floods swept away nine more. The sudden onslaught of weather has reminded officials of how unpredictable the mountain’s climate can be.
Earlier this year, Nepal introduced stricter climbing guidelines aimed at easing overcrowding on Everest, a move that has already begun to reduce the risk for many climbers. Yet the currents of the storm show that even with regulations, the mountain remains unforgiving.
Rescue crews continue their efforts to reach the stranded camps, hoping to bring more hikers safely down before the weather turns again. For thousands of climbers, the boot‑crunched snow and sudden avalanches have turned dreams into a stark reminder of how dangerous even the most iconic peaks can be.
