Palestinian Ambassador to India, Abdullah Abu Shawesh, has high praise for India’s role on the world stage. In a recent chat with , he called India a major force in global politics, thanks to its massive influence.
“India stands as the world’s largest democracy, home to 1.4 billion people,” Shawesh said. Drawing from his eight years at the United Nations, he stressed how India’s decisions there can reshape international affairs. “On political issues, India is a key player. We count on India to use its strong, respected political power,” he added.
Shawesh highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ongoing support for Palestine. Modi has committed $5 million each year to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), the UN body that aids Palestinian refugees. Under Modi’s leadership, India backed key UN resolutions for Palestine. “India has always stood with the Palestinian people, and we trust that continues,” Shawesh noted.
The ambassador also pointed to the solid bond between Palestine’s President Mahmoud Abbas and PM Modi. Abbas recently sent Modi a personal letter seeking help on several matters. “We’re confident their relationship remains strong,” Shawesh said.
India-Palestine relations run deep, rooted in shared history. Both nations declared independence around the same time, and ties date back to the 1930s. During Palestine’s first revolution from 1936 to 1939, India was fighting its own independence struggle, and historical records show India backed the Palestinian cause.
Shawesh recalled India’s pioneering steps: It became the first non-Arab and non-Muslim country to recognize the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) in 1974 as the legitimate voice of Palestinians. Earlier, in 1947, under Mahatma Gandhi’s guidance, India voted against the UN partition plan for Palestine—a move Palestinians still appreciate greatly.
