India has strongly condemned a shocking terror attack on the Heaton Park Synagogue in Manchester, which struck right in the middle of Yom Kippur services. The incident happened on Thursday, a day that’s especially heartbreaking because it falls on the International Day of Non-Violence.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared his thoughts on X, calling the attack a grim reminder of the fight against terrorism. “We condemn the terror attack on the Heaton Park Synagogue in Manchester, during Yom Kippur services today,” he wrote. “It is particularly saddening that this heinous act was committed on the International Day of Non-violence. This attack is yet another grim reminder of the challenge we face from the evil forces of terrorism, which the global community must combat and defeat through united and concerted action. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and the city of Manchester. We stand in solidarity with the people of the United Kingdom in this moment of grief.”
The attack unfolded in Manchester’s Crumpsall neighborhood, where a driver plowed a car into a crowd of people, and a man suffered stab wounds. At least two victims lost their lives, and three others fight for their lives in serious condition. Armed police officers shot the suspected attacker, who authorities believe died at the scene.
Inside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue, worshippers quickly evacuated as emergency teams rushed in to help. Greater Manchester Police activated PLATO—a special national alert for when armed units mobilize against an active threat, as reported by CNN.
In response, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer pledged to boost security at synagogues nationwide with extra police resources. “The fact that this has taken place on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, makes it all the more horrific,” Starmer posted on X. “My thoughts are with the loved ones of all those affected.”
Starmer is also cutting short his trip to Copenhagen, where he attended a key security summit with European leaders. He’ll head back to the UK right away to lead an emergency Cobra committee meeting, the government’s go-to group for handling national crises.
