India welcomes Nepal’s interim govt, hopes for peace and stability

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has warmly welcomed the new interim government in Nepal, led by former Chief Justice Sushila Karki. This move comes as a big step toward bringing peace and stability to the Himalayan nation, especially since India and Nepal share a close bond as neighbors, fellow democracies, and long-time development partners.

In an official statement, the MEA said: “We welcome the formation of a new Interim Government in Nepal, led by Right Honourable Mrs Sushila Karki. We are hopeful that this would help in fostering peace and stability. As a close neighbour, a fellow democracy and a long term development partner, India will continue to work closely with Nepal for the well-being and prosperity of our two peoples and countries.”

Karki took oath as Nepal’s first woman interim Prime Minister on Friday, sworn in by President Ramchandra Paudel during a ceremony in Kathmandu. Her appointment follows the recent resignation of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, triggered by a powerful youth-led movement. Young leaders, especially from Gen Z, pushed for a non-political and trustworthy figure to steer the country through this tough transition period.

What makes Karki’s selection special is the rare unity it shows in Nepal’s often divided politics. Gen Z activists organized a public vote on the online platform Discord, and Karki topped the list as the most popular choice. Even traditional political groups backed her, seeing her as a symbol of stability and credibility amid the unrest, reports The Kathmandu Post.

Now leading the interim government, Karki plans to restore order, conduct fair elections, and drive Nepal’s development forward. She’s widely respected for her judicial independence and stands out as someone acceptable to both the youth movement and established politicians. Born on June 7, 1952, in Shankarpur, Biratnagar, Karki’s rise to this role stems from a solid career in law and her rock-solid reputation for honesty.

She completed her early education in Biratnagar, then earned a master’s degree from Banaras Hindu University in India, followed by a Bachelor of Laws from Tribhuvan University in 1978. Karki started practicing law in 1979 and quickly rose through the ranks. She served as president of the Koshi Zonal Bar Association and the Biratnagar Appellate Bar before becoming a Supreme Court justice in 2009.

In July 2016, she made history as Nepal’s first woman Chief Justice. During her time, she delivered bold rulings in major corruption cases involving politicians, earning praise for standing firm against pressure. Even though she was nominated to the Supreme Court under the Nepali Congress quota, colleagues say she never let politics sway her decisions.

Her tenure ended abruptly in June 2017 due to a controversial impeachment motion from the then Sher Bahadur Deuba-led coalition. Many saw it as a political ploy to block her verdict on a police chief appointment. But those who worked with her, like former Supreme Court justice Ananda Mohan Bhattarai, describe Karki as incredibly courageous and full of integrity.

Bhattarai told The Kathmandu Post that Karki and her husband have played key roles in Nepal’s democratic movement. “They are true Gandhians, not just in ideology but also in lifestyle. She has agreed to shoulder such a huge challenge, demonstrating her courage. We all need to support her,” he said. “I am fully hopeful that she will lead through the transition period, embracing democratic principles at the highest level.”

Karki has always spoken out strongly against corruption. Her benches issued landmark verdicts that held politicians accountable, proving she never compromised her principles despite her political ties. As Nepal navigates this key moment, her leadership could pave the way for a brighter, more stable future for the nation.
