Christian youth brutally killed in Pakistan amid rise in escalating violence against minorities

In Pakistan’s Punjab province, a shocking attack has claimed the life of another young Christian man, highlighting the ongoing dangers religious minorities face in the country. Human rights group Voice of Pakistan Minorities (VOPM) shared details of the brutal murder on Tuesday.
The victim, 32-year-old Asif, was walking near a graveyard in the Daniwal area when seven attackers ambushed him. Three of them—Azan, Wahab, and Hanan—belong to a radical Islamist group, according to VOPM. The assailants beat Asif repeatedly in the head with bricks. No one heard his cries for help, and even after rushing him to a hospital, he died from his injuries.
“This wasn’t just random violence,” VOPM said. “It was driven by religious hatred, targeting Asif for being Christian and part of a vulnerable minority community.” The group pointed out that the government’s response has fallen short. Police arrested one attacker, Wahab, but the others are still on the run.
VOPM warns that this case shows a bigger problem: Pakistan’s authorities often fail to act quickly on attacks against religious minorities, letting extremism spread unchecked. “The lack of urgency in stopping sectarian violence leaves these communities exposed to more hate and discrimination,” the organization added.
Asif’s family is grieving not just their loved one but also a system that didn’t protect him. VOPM accused the government of ignoring pleas for justice and doing too little to fight rising religious extremism in Pakistan.
If officials keep overlooking these crimes, VOPM says, it tells minorities their lives don’t count. This cycle of impunity lets attackers keep spreading terror without fear.
