A fire erupted Monday at a demolition site near Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, but it didn’t disrupt flights or hurt anyone, according to first responders and the transport ministry.
The blaze broke out around 9:10 a.m. local time in Ota Ward, where thick black smoke filled the air. Firefighters quickly tackled the flames at the old hangar building and put them out after about two hours.
The site sits roughly 1.2 kilometers northwest of Haneda Airport’s Terminal 3. Officials say the fire damaged around 900 square meters of the roof while at least 20 workers were on the job tearing down the structure.
A witness told police the sparks flew when crews cut metal poles, igniting the Tokyo fire. No one got injured in the incident near the busy Haneda Airport. (Kyodo News via )
