Protesters in the US are gearing up for a big demonstration outside the Pakistan Consulate in New York. The Joint Action Committee USA wants to stand with people in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) and call out human rights violations there. The event kicks off on October 2 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at 12 E 65th St.
This rally responds to the intense unrest shaking PoJK right now. Locals are hitting the streets, pushing for economic relief, fair taxes, and basic civil rights. Muhammad Aurangzeb, a Kashmiri activist and host at Pahari Rang Media Group in New York, said the group is united in sending a strong message to Pakistan’s government: “Stop the human rights violations.”
Back in PoJK, tensions are boiling over. In Dadyal, one of the area’s richest spots, crowds have shut down businesses and marched for more than 48 hours straight. Videos on social media capture the chaos, with people blocking roads and defying authorities.
From the Neelum Valley, residents have pushed into Muzaffarabad’s Lal Chowk, vowing to avenge lives lost in the clashes. Protesters on X are warning that anyone firing on peaceful crowds will face consequences. In Plak Pal, Dadyal, demonstrators even lifted a container and tossed it off a bridge to clear a blockade.
Things turned deadly in Muzaffarabad, PoJK’s capital, where Pakistani security forces opened fire on crowds demanding a “Self-Rule Charter of Demands.” The Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JKJAAC) leads these protests, and sources report over half a dozen deaths and serious injuries in the last three days.
The movement started peacefully but has spread to districts like Mirpur, Kotli, and beyond. Shops, markets, and transport have ground to a halt, showing deep frustration with how Islamabad is handling the crisis. Authorities slapped an indefinite lockdown on the region last week after JKJAAC rallies drew huge crowds.
At the heart of it all is JKJAAC’s 38-point charter. Protesters want to scrap reserved seats in PoJK—specifically, the 12 legislative spots for Kashmiri refugees in Pakistan, which got axed recently. They’re also calling for cheaper electricity bills, subsidized wheat flour, an end to government officials’ perks, and free education and healthcare for everyone in PoJK.
Internet blackouts have hit the whole area, and clashes with police keep flaring up. Daily life is paralyzed, with protesters breaking through barricades in caravans to reach Muzaffarabad. In Dudyal, Mirpur, the action committee says they won’t bury a fallen protester until officials meet their demands, even as security teams clear bridges to stop the advances.
JKJAAC has rallied thousands across Mirpur, Kotli, and Muzaffarabad in what looks like a rare show of unity against government inaction. Rights activists, politicians, and leaders in the Kashmiri diaspora are slamming Pakistan’s “systematic oppression” in PoJK and promising ongoing support for the people’s fight.
