Kathmandu Mayor pays tribute as Gen Z protests claim 51 lives

Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah has paid a heartfelt tribute to the young protesters who lost their lives in Nepal’s recent Gen Z protests. In a touching social media post in Nepali, Shah called their sacrifices a game-changer for the country’s future. “Dear Gen Z, your contributions and bravery have sparked real change in Nepal. We honor these brave martyrs whose efforts will inspire patriotism in generations to come. Wishing a quick recovery to all the injured,” he wrote.

The protests, driven by Nepal’s youth, turned deadly after starting on September 8. Nepal’s Ministry of Health and Population reports 51 deaths so far. Tragically, 30 people died from gunshots, while 21 others succumbed to burns, wounds, and other injuries. Nepal Police spokesperson Ramesh Thapa confirmed the toll includes one Indian national and three police officers.

At Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Maharajgunj, at least 36 bodies arrived for post-mortem exams, which kicked off on Friday. The hospital has begun releasing the bodies to families after completing the procedures.

These youth-led demonstrations exploded in cities like Kathmandu, Pokhara, Butwal, and Birgunj. They began when the government blocked major social media platforms over worries about tax revenue and cybersecurity. In response, authorities slapped curfews on several areas, including Kathmandu. The Nepalese Army says the Friday curfew will lift at 5 pm but return from 7 pm until 6 am Saturday.

In a major political shake-up, Nepal’s Parliament dissolved late Friday—just hours after Sushila Karki, a former Chief Justice, was sworn in as the interim Prime Minister. This makes her Nepal’s first woman PM. The decision came from her first cabinet meeting at 11 pm. President Ram Chandra Poudel’s office announced fresh elections for the House of Representatives on March 5, 2026.

Karki took her oath earlier that day at Sheetal Niwas, the presidential residence in Kathmandu. Her rise follows the resignation of former PM KP Sharma Oli earlier this week. It all stems from weeks of anti-corruption protests fueled by Gen Z activists pushing for better political accountability.

The new cabinet now focuses on restoring calm across Nepal and setting up fair elections amid the ongoing unrest.
