Malaysian rapper and filmmaker Wee Meng Chee, better known as Namewee, turned himself in to police on Wednesday. He will be held in remand for six days as authorities investigate the death of Hsieh Yu‑hsin, a Taiwanese social‑media star with more than half a million followers.
Police said they re‑classified Hsieh’s October 22 death in Kuala Lumpur as a murder after new evidence surfaced. The suspect, who was last seen with Hsieh before her body was found in a hotel bathtub, is now in custody. Wee denies any involvement and has pledged to cooperate fully with investigators.
Hsieh, 31, was known online as the “Nurse Goddess” and also ran an OnlyFans account. She arrived in Malaysia on October 20 for a brief four‑day stay. The coronial team is still awaiting the final post‑mortem and toxicology reports to confirm the exact cause of death.
“We’re keeping the public informed once we have more details,” Wee’s lawyer, Joshua Tay, said. “The investigation will be thorough, objective and fair.”
Wee, 42, has a history of clashes with Malaysian authorities over his outspoken music and films. He has been questioned multiple times for content that critics say includes racial slurs and disrespect to religion. In 2014, his film was banned for negatively portraying national agencies. In 2016, a music video featuring the word “Allah” and set in places of worship drew complaints from Malay Islamic activists, though Wee was never charged. He faced another detention in 2018 after a video that used dog masks in what officials called obscene choreography.
“We’re not targeting anyone’s faith or ethnicity,” Wee said in past statements. “My art challenges hypocrisy and abuses of power, not any particular religion.”
The case also highlights pressure from China, where Wee released a 2021 track with Australian singer Kimberley Chen that mocked Chinese nationalists and touched on Taiwan’s sovereignty. Beijing banned both artists from entering the country and removed their song from all local platforms.
The investigation into Hsieh’s death continues. Police will decide whether more charges are needed once the forensic evidence is complete. Meanwhile, Wee remains in remand, awaiting further questioning by authorities.
