A sudden power outage hit Kuala Lumpur last night, leaving thousands of shoppers and workers without electricity. The blackout started around 8:00 p.m., when the main power lines to the city’s central grid failed. By 9:30 p.m., the outage had spread to several high‑traffic areas, including the Mid Valley Shopping Mall, Pavilion Damansara Heights Shopping Centre, and the bustling business district of TRX.
At Mid Valley, the lights flickered and then went dark. Shops closed quickly, and staff had to use flashlights to move customers to safer spots. Many customers stayed inside the mall, waiting for the power to come back on. Pavilion Damansara Heights saw a similar shutdown, with both its indoor and outdoor displays darkened. Workers at the commercial towers in TRX reported a complete loss of power, forcing them to shut down elevators and conserve batteries.
City officials say the outage was caused by a technical fault in the regional power grid. Firefighters and emergency teams were dispatched to ensure safety, especially in areas beneath the busy streets where traffic lights and security cameras were also down. “We’re working hard to restore power to all affected zones and keep everyone safe,” the Chief Electrical Officer said. The blackout lasted for roughly ninety minutes, after which most power was restored by noon. However, some parts of TRX are still experiencing voltage issues, and customers are advised to stay alert.
Business owners at the malls and office buildings have started offering refunds and discounts to affected customers. “It’s tough when the lights go out, but we’re pleased to see how quickly the teams responded,” said a manager at Mid Valley. Residents and shoppers on the U 3, the main arterial road linking the shopping centers, now report back online that the outage may have been caused by a storm that struck the area earlier in the week.
The event has prompted local electricity providers to review backup systems and improve grid resilience, especially during heavy weather. As the city recovers, those who experienced the blackout share their stories: “I was just walking to the mall, and then everything went black,” said a passerby. “It was like being in the dark in the middle of a city.” The incident has sparked a conversation across social media about the importance of reliable power and the need for better emergency plans in busy commercial districts.
