Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam is wrapping up a special visit to India, and it kicked off with a heartfelt stop at the famous Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi. The trip highlights the strong cultural ties between India and Mauritius, bringing the two nations even closer.
The delegation, led by PM Ramgoolam, arrived in Varanasi on Wednesday. Right away, they headed to the sacred Kashi Vishwanath Dham, a major Lord Shiva temple that’s a big draw for devotees. PM Ramgoolam offered prayers there, soaking in the spiritual vibes. Later, he continued his journey by visiting the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya, showing respect for India’s rich heritage.
One member of the Mauritius team, Kevin C Lukeeram, couldn’t hold back his excitement. “We thank everyone,” he said. “We feel a real sense of belonging here in India, especially in Varanasi. We can’t wait to come back. We’re so grateful to the people of India, the government, and PM Modi, who’s doing an amazing job for everyone.”
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) called the visit a shining example of the deep cultural and civilizational bonds between India and Mauritius. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the MEA shared how PM Ramgoolam’s temple stop reinforced these historic connections that unite the two countries.
But the trip wasn’t just about spirituality—it packed in some serious business too. On Thursday, PM Ramgoolam met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Varanasi. The two leaders talked about boosting ties in key areas like infrastructure, healthcare, digital tech, energy, and maritime security. They also touched on regional and global issues to strengthen their partnership.
The meeting led to big wins: seven Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) got signed across sectors like science and technology, oceanography, public administration, power, small development projects, hydrography, and space cooperation. Highlights include a new space deal for setting up telemetry, tracking, and communication stations, plus fresh commitments to maritime research and hydrographic mapping. On top of that, India announced a massive Special Economic Package worth over USD 680 million to support Mauritius’s growth.
This bilateral visit from September 9 to 16 shows how India and Mauritius are teaming up for a brighter future, blending culture, faith, and smart cooperation.
