The 50‑day Jaipur Foot Fitment Camp has finished in Trinidad and Tobago, giving free artificial legs to more than 800 people. The event was a direct result of a promise made by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to the country last year.
Indian High Commissioner to Trinidad and Tobago, Pradeep Singh Rajpurohit, said the camp is a “big thing” that strengthens ties between the two nations. “It may look like a small promise from PM Modi, but it is huge for us,” he told local media. “There is a huge need for prosthetic limbs here, and the cost in this part of the world is exorbitant. The Jaipur Foot is a big gift from the Government of India and from PM Modi.”
The camp ran for 50 days at the Diwali Nagar venue and was organized by the National Council of Indian Culture. It was one of the first commitments announced during Modi’s bilateral tour.
Founder and chief patron of the Jaipur Foot, Dr. Mehta, said the project reflects “universal brotherhood.” He recalled the emotions of the recipients: “Before touching the limbs, the recipients’ faces were sad. After fitting the Jaipur Foot, their faces lit up. The joy was enormous, and many women cried tears of relief and happiness.”
Prem Bhandari, chairman of Jaipur Foot USA, added that the event marks a turning point in India‑Trinidad relations. “After PM Modi’s visit, the dynamics between our countries changed. This camp is the biggest gift for Diwali and a true help for the differently‑abled community,” he shared.
Minister Barry Padarath, who works in the Office of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Public Utilities, expressed gratitude. “The promise made by PM Modi has been kept,” he said. “This is a gift on the rich soil of Trinidad and Tobago, a testament to the love and cooperation between our two nations.”
The free prosthetic limbs not only provide mobility but also empower recipients to re-enter the workforce and become productive citizens. “This partnership is generous in intent and real in its impact,” Padarath highlighted.
To recap: the Jaipur Foot Fitment Camp, spearheaded by India’s humanitarian outreach, delivered over 800 free artificial limbs to people in Trinidad and Tobago, fulfilling a pledge made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and reinforcing the accelerating relationship between the two countries.
