Miss Universe contestants left a pre‑pageant meeting in a hurry after a Thai executive, Nawat Itsaragrisil, berated the Miss Mexico delegate, Fatima Bosch, on live video.
The angered businessman—who runs the Miss Universe show in Thailand—called Bosch a “dummy” and demanded she explain why she didn’t join a sponsored photo shoot. The outburst was captured and streamed on Facebook, sparking an instant backlash.
During the Tuesday sash ceremony, Itsaragrisil confronted several participants and singled out Bosch for not participating in a mandatory social‑media shoot. He publicly accused her of lacking respect for Thai‑based sponsors and even ordered security to escort her out. Between the heated words, he called Bosch a “dummy”—a insult that sparked outrage among the gathered contestants.
The clash put a spotlight on the tension between contestants and pageant officials. Bosch defended herself, saying the executive’s language was sexist and humiliating. “I’m here representing a country, and you treat me like I’m not a woman,” she said after walking out.
Other contestants—most notably current Miss Universe Victoria Kjær Theilvig—stood up and left the room in solidarity with Bosch. They moved off the line, refusing to continue the event until the issue was addressed.
The live clip spread on Facebook and on Instagram, where fans demanded accountability for Itsaragrisil. Comments called for his removal and for the pageant to protect the dignity of its women. A common refrain was, “No more Nawat—he needs to be out.”
Miss Universe president Raúl Rocha Cantú acknowledged the incident and declared that Itsaragrisil had “humiliated, insulted, and showed a blatant lack of respect.” He will send new CEO Mario Búcaro to Thailand to oversee the rest of the competition, limiting the former executive’s authority ahead of the crowning ceremony on Nov. 20.
The controversy has highlighted issues of respect, gender rights, and professionalism in beauty pageants. Contestants and fans alike are calling for stronger protections and clearer guidelines during event preparations. As the pageant continues, all eyes remain on how the Miss Universe organization will ensure a fair and respectful environment for its leading ladies.
