India’s Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita, is set to visit Papua New Guinea on September 16. He’s heading there at the invitation of the PNG government to represent Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the special events for the country’s 50th Independence Day anniversary.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) shared this update in an official statement. During his trip, Margherita will hold bilateral meetings with PNG’s top political leaders. He’ll also connect with the Indian diaspora and local business folks in the region, building stronger ties.
This visit follows the successful 3rd Summit of the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) that PM Modi led in Port Moresby back in May 2023. It offers a great chance to keep the momentum going with Pacific Island Countries (PICs), as the MEA pointed out. The timing is spot on, coming right after the Indian Navy band joined PNG’s military tattoo for the Independence Day festivities.
Earlier this month, the Indian Navy’s INS Kadmatt, an advanced indigenous ASW Corvette, docked at Port Moresby. The ship took part in PNG’s official Independence Day parade and cultural events, showcasing the deepening maritime partnership between India and Papua New Guinea. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) called it a symbol of India’s commitment to the Act East Policy, aiming to boost peace, stability, and growth in the Indo-Pacific region while honoring shared democratic values.
Through these steps, India continues to strengthen its bonds with Pacific Island nations, fostering friendship and cooperation.
