Myanmar Army Leader Visits Indian Military Units to Boost Defence Ties
A top Myanmar Army official, Lieutenant General Ko Ko Oo, recently visited key Indian Army units to strengthen military cooperation between the two nations. This high-level interaction highlights growing defence ties amid regional security challenges.
Lieutenant General Ko Ko Oo, who commands the Bureau of Special Operations-1 (BSO-1) in the Myanmar Army, arrived in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, on September 10-11. He toured the Shatrujeet Brigade, where Indian Army officers gave him a detailed briefing on the brigade’s elite training programs, specialized operational capabilities, and its vital role in modern warfare. The visit wasn’t just about tours—his delegation held productive talks on emerging security threats facing both countries.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Indian Army shared: "The delegation engaged in meaningful interactions and discussions, focusing on emerging security challenges. The visit further reinforced the bonds of friendship and trust, while providing a strong impetus to India-Myanmar defence cooperation and mutual understanding between the two Armies."
This wasn’t the only stop on the itinerary. The six-member Myanmar Army delegation, led by Lt Gen Ko Ko Oo, also visited the Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Gaya on September 11. As part of the 7th Army-to-Army Staff Talks (AAST), they explored the academy’s functioning, organization, and various training facilities. Discussions centered on sharing best practices, exchanging ideas, and enhancing cooperation in military training. Another Indian Army X post noted: "Meaningful discussions were held with an aim to exchange ideas to enhance cooperation and sharing of best practices in training."
The trip kicked off with an important meeting in New Delhi. On September 11, Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi sat down with Lt Gen Ko Ko Oo to discuss ways to deepen bilateral defence cooperation and military-to-military relations. Their conversation covered expanding joint military exercises, the current geostrategic environment in the region, and a shared commitment to regional peace and stability.
The Indian Army emphasized in its X update: "Their discussions focused on advancing bilateral Defence Cooperation, expanding military-to-military ties, the prevailing geostrategic environment in the region, and reaffirming the mutual commitment to regional peace & stability."
These visits come at a time when India and Myanmar are ramping up their defence partnership to tackle common challenges like border security and regional stability. Such interactions not only build trust but also pave the way for stronger collaboration between the two armies in the years ahead.
