Myanmar felt the ground shake twice on Friday, October 3, 2025, as two minor earthquakes hit the region. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported the details on social media, highlighting the country’s ongoing seismic activity.
The second quake, measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale, struck at 9:54 a.m. Indian Standard Time. It centered at latitude 24.70 N and longitude 94.89 E, with a depth of 90 kilometers. NCS shared: “EQ of M: 3.3, On: 03/10/2025 09:54:06 IST.”
Just hours earlier, at 3:43 a.m. IST, a slightly stronger 3.6 magnitude earthquake rocked Myanmar. That one hit at latitude 25.05 N and longitude 97.61 E, only 60 kilometers deep. NCS posted the update quickly, urging people to stay alert.
Why do these quakes matter? Shallow earthquakes like the 3.6 one pack more punch because their waves reach the surface faster, causing stronger shaking and potential damage to buildings and roads. Deeper ones, such as the 3.3, lose some intensity on the way up.
Myanmar sits in a hotspot for earthquakes, squeezed between four major tectonic plates: the Indian, Eurasian, Sunda, and Burma plates. This setup fuels constant geological action, including risks of tsunamis along its long coastline. A massive 1,400-kilometer transform fault cuts through the country, linking the Andaman spreading center to the Sagaing Fault up north.
That Sagaing Fault ramps up dangers in big cities like Sagaing, Mandalay, Bago, and Yangon—home to nearly half of Myanmar’s population. Even Yangon, a bit farther from the fault, faces threats due to its crowded urban areas. Back in 1903, a 7.0 magnitude quake near Bago shook Yangon hard, proving how far the impacts can reach.
These recent tremors come after devastating quakes earlier this year. On March 28, 2025, a 7.7 magnitude event and a follow-up 6.4 one battered central Myanmar. The World Health Organization warned of rising health crises for displaced survivors, including tuberculosis, HIV, and diseases spread by water or insects.
For real-time updates on Myanmar earthquakes and seismic hazards, apps like BhooKamp can help track activity. As experts monitor the Sagaing Fault and tectonic plates, residents in earthquake-prone areas should prepare with emergency kits and sturdy homes to stay safe.
