The Myanmar military has shut down a key cybercrime centre in the capital and taken more than 2,000 people into custody.
Military officers moved quickly to close the state‑run office that had been the hub for policing internet abuse. Police vans were seen entering the building, and security forces seized computers, phones and other equipment.
Sources inside the Ministry of Digital Affairs said that the centre was transferred to a new location under tighter control. According to a local NGO, hundreds of its staff were arrested on allegations of “information sabotage.” The move is part of the army’s ongoing crackdown on online dissent.
Health officials say that those detained will be processed at nearby detention sites. Army spokespersons say the action was needed to “defend national security” after a rise in cyber‑attacks. The shutdown comes amid growing criticism from the international community, which calls for a restoration of internet freedoms and the release of political prisoners.
