In Mizoram, troops from the Assam Rifles made a big bust on Tuesday night, grabbing methamphetamine tablets worth about 20.61 crore rupees. The operation targeted drug smuggling in the Khawzawl area, right along the border with Myanmar.
Acting on solid tips about contraband drugs moving through the region, the security forces spotted a suspect hauling a suspicious package. He ditched it in the jungle and ran off when he saw the troops closing in. A quick search turned up 6.87 kilograms of the illegal tablets, a highly addictive substance also called Yaba, party tablets, or WY—short for “World is Yours.”
The Assam Rifles handed the seized narcotics straight over to Mizoram Police for deeper investigation. Officials say this haul shows their ongoing fight against drug trafficking from Myanmar, where the drugs originated and were headed for other parts of India or even overseas.
Myanmar plays a major role in this problem, sharing a long, unfenced 1,643-kilometer border with India’s northeastern states like Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland, and Mizoram. In Mizoram alone, districts such as Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip border Myanmar’s Chin state over 510 kilometers. That area’s notorious for smuggling not just drugs like heroin and methamphetamine, but also exotic wildlife and other illegal goods into Northeast India.
This isn’t the only recent win for the Assam Rifles. Just days earlier, on September 29, they nabbed methamphetamine worth over 60 crore rupees in West Tripura’s Mohanpur area, near the Bangladesh border. There, troops intercepted a huge shipment that smugglers tried to slip through amid the Durga Puja festivities. These quick actions are stopping drug peddlers in their tracks and protecting communities from the dangers of addiction.
