Nepal’s Political Crisis Deepens: Gen-Z Protests Claim 51 Lives Amid Calls for Interim Government
In the heart of Kathmandu, Nepal’s leaders are grappling with a massive political storm. On Friday, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Chairperson of the National Assembly released a joint statement addressing the ongoing crisis sparked by fierce Gen-Z protests. They expressed deep shock over the violence that unfolded on Bhadra 23 and 24, 2082, which led to heartbreaking losses.
"We stand with the families mourning young lives lost in these protests, as well as the brave police officers who died serving their duty," the statement said. It offered sincere condolences to the bereaved and wished quick recovery for the injured, urging the government to provide all necessary medical support without delay.
The leaders didn’t hold back on the destruction. Arson and vandalism hit hard on Bhadra 24, targeting key spots like the Federal Parliament Building in Baneshwor, the Secretariat in Singha Durbar, government offices, private homes, media outlets, businesses, and even historical sites. "This has dealt irreparable damage to our nation," they warned, pointing to the widespread chaos that scorched public property across Nepal.
As the country faces this tough moment, the statement praised President Ram Chandra Paudel for steering efforts toward a solution through constitutional channels. It stressed protecting Nepal’s sovereignty, civil rights, territorial integrity, unity, and independence. "We must stick to the rule of law and constitutional principles—no exceptions," they declared.
In a call to action, the leaders urged everyone to unite for a stronger democracy. "Let’s address the demands of those protesting and build a more advanced, prosperous Nepal," they appealed.
The Human Toll of Nepal’s Gen-Z Protests
The stakes couldn’t be higher. Nepal’s Ministry of Health and Population reported on Friday that the death toll from the Gen-Z protests has climbed to 51. Of these, 30 people died from gunshots, while 21 succumbed to burns, wounds, and other injuries. Tragically, the victims include one Indian national and three police officers, as confirmed by Nepal Police co-spokesperson Ramesh Thapa.
At Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Maharajgunj, 36 bodies await post-mortem exams, which kicked off today. The hospital has also begun releasing the remains of Gen-Z protesters after autopsies, allowing families to find some closure amid the grief.
These protests erupted on September 8, 2025, in Kathmandu and cities like Pokhara, Butwal, and Birgunj. What lit the fuse? The government’s sudden ban on major social media platforms, aimed at tackling tax revenue leaks and cybersecurity threats. Frustrated youth took to the streets, demanding an end to deep-rooted corruption, favoritism in governance, and more transparency from leaders.
Tensions boiled over with the "Nepo Babies" social media trend, exposing the flashy lives of politicians’ kids against the struggles of everyday Nepalis. This spotlight on economic inequality fueled the fire, turning peaceful demands into widespread unrest.
Curfews and Crackdowns in Nepal
To rein in the chaos, authorities imposed curfews in several cities, including Kathmandu. The restrictions run until 5 pm today and resume from 7 pm Saturday to 6 am Sunday, according to the Nepalese Army. Protesters continue pushing for real change, but the violence has left scars on Nepal’s fragile democracy.
Push for Interim Government Gains Momentum
Hope flickers on the political front. A key meeting to form an interim government is set for today at President Paudel’s official residence, Sital Niwas, in Kathmandu. This comes right after Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s resignation, triggered by the nationwide Gen-Z protests and political deadlock.
Top on the agenda? Forming a stable interim setup, with former Chief Justice Sushila Karki emerging as a strong contender for interim Prime Minister. Sources close to the matter, including coordinator Om Prakash Aryal, say Karki will first chat with senior advocate Baburam Kunwar, the President’s legal advisor, before meeting the President. If all aligns, she could take oath as head of the interim cabinet by day’s end.
Karki’s rise isn’t random. Gen-Z protest leaders endorsed her during a Thursday press conference, praising her integrity and independence. Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balendra Shah Balen has also thrown his weight behind her, boosting her as the movement’s top pick.
This support surges against a backdrop of fury over corruption, economic gaps, and the social media ban that ignited the protests on September 8. As Nepal navigates this crisis, all eyes are on whether Karki’s potential leadership can calm the streets and restore trust in governance. The nation waits, hoping for unity and progress.
