Nepal’s interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki is expanding her cabinet today, adding at least three key ministers to her team. This move comes just days after she took office, as the country gears up for fresh elections.
Officials from the Prime Minister’s Office say Karki finalized the names after detailed internal discussions. Leading the pack is Kulman Ghising, the former Managing Director of the Nepal Electricity Authority. He will head the Ministry of Energy, Urban Development and Physical Infrastructure. Ghising is known for his work in powering up Nepal’s electricity sector.
Next up, Om Prakash Aryal, who served as Legal Advisor to the Kathmandu Metropolitan City, takes charge of the Ministry of Law and Home Affairs. Rounding out the trio is Rameshwor Khanal, a former Finance Secretary, who will lead the Ministry of Finance. These experienced picks aim to bring stability to Nepal’s interim government.
The oath-taking ceremony for these new Nepal ministers is set for Monday at the President’s office in Shital Nivas. Sources confirm that the names have already reached President Ram Chandra Poudel, and everything is ready to go.
Karki’s appointment as head of the interim government happened late Friday, with her officially starting work on Sunday. The cabinet expansion got pushed from Sunday due to her busy schedule, but it’s happening now.
She’s not stopping at these three—Karki is still reviewing more names for other portfolios. Officials say she’s held consultations and even interviews with potential candidates, focusing on their plans for Nepal’s future.
As a former Chief Justice, Karki has until March 5 to hold elections and hand over power to a new parliament. In her first speech after assuming office, she struck a humble tone, promising no power grabs. “My team and I aren’t here to taste power. We’ll stay no longer than six months and pass the responsibility to the elected parliament. We need your support to succeed,” she said at a press conference in Singha Durbar.
Karki also addressed the recent protests, assuring families that the government will help transport the bodies of those who died to their home districts. She acknowledged the damage to property and vowed state support for victims. Plus, her administration plans to probe acts of vandalism and violence to ensure justice.
This cabinet expansion in Nepal’s interim government signals a push for quick stability ahead of the elections. Stay tuned for updates on how these new leaders shape the country’s path.
