Nepal’s parliament got a major shake-up late Friday night as President Ram Chandra Poudel dissolved the House of Representatives. Just hours earlier, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki had taken oath as the country’s new interim Prime Minister. This bold move sets the stage for fresh elections on March 5, 2026, kicking off a six-month transitional government to guide Nepal through the changes.
The decision came right after Karki’s first cabinet meeting at 11 pm. In an official statement, the President’s Office confirmed the dissolution effective from that very hour on Friday, Bhadra 27, 2082 BS in the Nepali calendar. “The election for the new House of Representatives is now fixed for Thursday, Falgun 21, 2082 BS—that’s March 5, 2026,” the statement noted. Karki’s team now has the big job of restoring calm and getting everything ready for the federal parliament polls next year.
Making history, Karki became Nepal’s first woman Prime Minister. She swore in earlier that day at Sheetal Niwas, the presidential residence in Kathmandu. Her rise to power followed KP Sharma Oli’s resignation earlier this week, sparked by weeks of youth-led protests demanding an end to corruption and more accountability from politicians.
Across the border, India’s Ministry of External Affairs quickly welcomed the news. In a statement, they said: “We welcome the formation of a new Interim Government in Nepal, led by Right Honourable Mrs Sushila Karki. We’re hopeful this will foster peace and stability in the Himalayan nation. As a close neighbor, fellow democracy, and long-term development partner, India will keep working hand-in-hand with Nepal for the well-being and prosperity of our people and countries.”
What makes Karki’s appointment so special? It’s a rare win for unity in Nepal’s often rocky politics. Gen Z leaders ran a public vote on Discord, and she topped the list as the top pick—not just with young protesters, but also with old-school political groups craving stability. Sources like The Kathmandu Post highlight her as a credible choice, thanks to her strong record on judicial independence. Now, she’s focused on bringing back order, running fair elections, and pushing Nepal’s development forward.
