Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) shared a grim update on the devastating floods that have hit the country hard since late June. Heavy rains and flash floods have claimed at least 1,006 lives and forced rescuers to save 3.02 million people across the nation.
In a statement released Sunday, NDMA highlighted the massive response effort. Teams carried out 5,768 rescue operations nationwide, handing out 273,524 relief items like food packs and hygiene kits. They also set up 741 medical camps where emergency services, including the Pakistan Army and provincial teams, treated more than 662,000 flood victims.
The death toll breaks down unevenly by region. Punjab saw the most losses with 304 fatalities, including 110 children, 143 men, and 51 women. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), 504 people died—90 kids, 338 men, and 76 women. Sindh reported 80 deaths, Balochistan 30, Pakistan-occupied Gilgit-Baltistan (PoGB) 41, Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) 38, and Islamabad nine. Overall, 1,063 others suffered injuries, with Punjab leading at 661 cases, followed by K-P with 218.
Rescue teams focused heavily on Punjab, evacuating 2.81 million people through 4,749 operations. In Sindh, they saved 184,011 in 753 missions, while K-P rescued 14,317 via 211 efforts. These numbers underscore the scale of Pakistan’s flash floods this monsoon season.
The damage goes beyond human suffering. Floodwaters wrecked 12,569 homes—4,128 completely destroyed and 8,441 partially damaged—and killed 6,509 livestock. Infrastructure took a big hit too, with 239 bridges and 1,981 kilometers of roads ruined. K-P alone lost 52 bridges and 437 km of roads; PoJK 94 bridges and 201 km; and PoGB 87 bridges and 20 km.
To help those affected, authorities distributed tents, blankets, solar panels, de-watering pumps, and generators. They established 1,690 camps in total: 741 for medical care that helped over 662,000 people, and 949 relief camps that provided shelter to 152,252 individuals.
NDMA says relief work continues, with teams pushing to restore roads and bridges while supporting recovery in flood-hit areas of Pakistan. ( via The Express Tribune)
