Imran Khan’s legal team has taken a bold step against what they call brutal treatment in his Pakistani jail. They’ve filed a complaint with the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, highlighting serious human rights violations during his detention. This comes as reported by Geo TV.
The appeal, submitted by Perseus Strategies on behalf of Khan’s lawyers, paints a grim picture of his conditions. It details a pattern of abuse, like long stretches in solitary confinement, no access to proper medical care, tainted food, and limited meetings with lawyers or family. These issues, the team argues, break Pakistan’s promises under key global rules—the Convention against Torture (CAT) and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).
Sulaiman Khan, one of Imran Khan’s sons, slammed the situation in a statement attached to the filing. “Our father is being kept in conditions that no human being should endure,” he said. “These are violations of his rights, and they amount to torture.”
His brother, Kasim Khan, echoed the outrage. “The UN has already recognised that our father’s imprisonment is arbitrary and unlawful,” he added. “What he is enduring now shows how far the regime will go to break him. But he will not be broken.”
Zulfi Bukhari, Imran Khan’s advisor on international affairs, praised the former prime minister’s strength. “He is enduring unlawful imprisonment and degrading treatment, but he remains a symbol of courage and peaceful resistance,” Bukhari said.
The team is calling on the UN rapporteur to investigate Imran Khan’s case urgently and push Pakistani authorities to protect his health and safety. Khan has been in custody since August 2023, facing charges in several cases. This move spotlights the ongoing battle over his detention and human rights in Pakistan.
