Afghan security sources report that Gul Rahman, the key figure behind Pakistan’s deadly Jaffar Express terrorist attack, has been killed in Afghanistan. The incident happened under unclear circumstances in Helmand province on September 17, according to ARY News.
Known by the alias Ustad Mureed, Gul Rahman led operations for the Majeed Brigade, also called Fitna al Hindustan. Pakistani officials describe him as an Indian-backed terrorist who trained fighters and planned strikes against the country’s security forces, civilians, Chinese workers, and key sites. His death spotlights how Afghanistan’s soil continues to serve as a launchpad for attacks on Pakistan.
Remember the Jaffar Express hijacking? On March 11, 2025, the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) seized the passenger train traveling from Quetta to Peshawar. It carried about 380 people, and the assault left at least 64 dead, including 18 soldiers. Pakistani forces fought back during the rescue, taking out 33 attackers.
This ties into bigger concerns about the BLA and its Majeed Brigade offshoot. In August, the United States slapped them with Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) labels. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio made the announcement, adding the groups to the list under Section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act and Executive Order 13224. The Majeed Brigade also got tagged as an alias for the BLA, which the US first named a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) back in 2019.
Since then, the BLA and Majeed Brigade have owned up to major hits. In 2024, they carried out suicide bombings near Karachi Airport and the Gwadar Port Authority Complex. And that Jaffar Express raid in March 2025? It killed 31 civilians and security personnel while holding over 300 hostages. These groups keep fueling violence across Pakistan, raising alarms about regional terrorism.
