Tragic road accidents claimed at least 13 lives in Pakistan’s Balochistan province on Thursday, with dozens more injured in two separate crashes. The incidents highlight ongoing safety concerns on the country’s highways.
In the first crash near Zero Point in Lasbela Uthal, a passenger coach slammed into a truck, killing six people and wounding 17 others, according to local authorities. Rescue teams rushed to the scene, where traffic ground to a halt on the national highway. Senior Superintendent of Police Atif Amir said crews worked fast to clear the wreckage and aid victims. By late afternoon, officials confirmed rescue operations wrapped up, and traffic started flowing again.
Just hours later, another coach veered off course in Hub-Winder, leaving seven passengers dead and 16 hurt. First responders from the Edhi Foundation pulled survivors from the twisted metal and rushed them to nearby hospitals. These back-to-back Balochistan road accidents have sparked calls for better road safety measures in the rugged region.
Shifting to Karachi, a deadly truck collision last August still haunts the city. On August 10, a dumper truck struck a motorcycle carrying a family on Rashid Minhas Road near Lucky One Mall around 3:15 a.m. The crash killed 22-year-old Mahnoor and her 14-year-old brother Ahmed Raza on the spot. Their 48-year-old father, Shakir, suffered serious injuries.
What followed turned chaotic. Enraged transporters blocked Rashid Minhas Road and the Superhighway near Sohrab Goth, snarling traffic for hours. A furious mob gathered and set seven dumpers ablaze on both sides of the road, within Yusuf Plaza and Federal B Area police stations. Central SSP Zeeshan Shafiq Siddiqi told reporters police arrived quickly, nabbed the truck driver, and seized the vehicle. Officers cordoned off the area, rerouted traffic, and called in fire crews to douse the flames.
In the aftermath, police arrested 14 people for torching the vehicles, with more suspects in the works thanks to video footage and other evidence. At Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, Police Surgeon Summaiya Syed confirmed the siblings arrived deceased. She noted from relatives that Mahnoor was set to marry soon, adding a heartbreaking layer to the family’s loss.
These Pakistan road accidents underscore the dangers of overloaded vehicles and poor road conditions, fueling demands for stricter enforcement and infrastructure upgrades.
