Pakistan Court Sentences Imran Khan and Wife Bushra Bibi to 17 Years in Corruption Case

A Pakistani court on Saturday sentenced former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi to 17 years in prison each in a corruption case, local media reported, according to PTI. The ruling comes amid mounting criticism of the Pakistani government over Khan’s alleged treatment while in custody.
Sentencing Amid International Scrutiny
The latest conviction follows growing concern from international observers. The United Nations has recently called for Imran Khan’s release from solitary confinement, citing human rights concerns.
Khan, 73, has been in jail since August 2023, facing multiple legal cases.
Sons Allege Harsh Prison Conditions
Earlier this week, Khan’s sons Kasim Khan and Sulaiman Isa Khan publicly raised serious allegations about their father’s treatment in jail. Speaking to Sky News journalist Yalda Hakim, they claimed Khan has been held in solitary confinement for nearly two years at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.
They alleged he is being kept in substandard conditions, including access to filthy water, and is housed near inmates suffering from hepatitis. The brothers described the situation as “psychological torture” and referred to his cell as a “death cell.”
“The conditions are not bad, they are awful,” Kasim Khan said. “We are now worried we might never see him again.” The family has also demanded “proof of life.”
Authorities Deny Allegations
Pakistani authorities have strongly denied the claims. The Adiala Jail administration said Imran Khan is in “completely good health” and is receiving all necessary medical care.
“The PTI leadership has been informed regarding Imran Khan’s health,” jail officials said in a statement, adding that rumors about his transfer from Adiala Jail are “entirely baseless.”
False Death Rumors Addressed
Last month, unverified claims about Imran Khan’s death circulated on social media platform X. Pakistani authorities dismissed the reports as false, reiterating that Khan remains healthy and in custody at Adiala Jail.
Ongoing Political Tensions
The sentencing is expected to further escalate political tensions in Pakistan, with supporters of Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), continuing to accuse the government of targeting the former prime minister through legal and institutional pressure.
