Pakistan’s federal government is set to hike petroleum product prices starting September 16, and it’s sparking fresh worries among everyday folks already hit hard by rising costs. According to ARY News, petrol could jump by Rs 1.54 per litre, while other fuels like high-speed diesel might see a steeper rise of up to Rs 4.79 per litre.
Sources close to the matter say the new rates are based on initial estimates. High-speed diesel prices are expected to increase by Rs 4.79 per litre, kerosene by Rs 3.06 per litre, and light diesel by Rs 3.68 per litre. This comes as Pakistan grapples with fuel price hikes amid global market fluctuations.
The Ministry of Petroleum has wrapped up its preliminary calculations and is teaming up with the Ministry of Finance to send a proposal to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for the final nod. Once approved, the updated petroleum prices will kick in for the next two weeks from September 16.
This isn’t the first time fuel costs are climbing in Pakistan. Back in July, petrol and diesel price hikes triggered widespread protests, with people slamming the government for ignoring the struggles of low-income families during the country’s economic crunch. Inflation and daily expenses are already squeezing households, and these changes could make things tougher.
Local resident Imran voiced the frustration many feel. “I don’t get it—petrol prices are dropping in international markets, but ours keep going up,” he said. “In just one month, petrol prices have risen twice. Where do the poor go? They’re jacking up K-Electric bills, gas rates, and now fuel. The government isn’t thinking about us. Prices should drop here too when global rates fall, like in other countries.”
As Pakistan’s fuel price updates unfold, many wonder how these changes will ripple through transport costs, groceries, and overall living expenses. Stay tuned for the official announcement.
