Pakistan’s government has raised petrol and diesel prices again, hitting drivers and commuters right in the wallet. The federal Ministry of Finance announced the changes on Tuesday, effective immediately, according to ARY News.
Petrol now costs Rs 268.68 per liter, up by Rs 4.07 from before. High-speed diesel jumped Rs 4.04 per liter to Rs 276.81. These petrol price hikes in Pakistan come amid fluctuating global oil markets, adding pressure on everyday expenses.
This move contrasts with some relief on the home front. Just days earlier, the Pakistan Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) cut liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices for October. A domestic LPG cylinder drops Rs 79.14 to Rs 2,448, while the per-kilogram rate falls Rs 6.71 to Rs 207.48 per kg. Families relying on LPG for cooking will welcome this LPG price reduction in Pakistan.
The diesel adjustment follows an earlier dip this month, when OGRA lowered high-speed diesel by Rs 2.78 per liter to Rs 272.77 for the next two weeks. But don’t get too comfortable—sources told ARY News that more increases loom. High-speed diesel could rise another Rs 4.79 per liter, kerosene by Rs 3.06, and light diesel by Rs 3.68. Officials have finished initial calculations and will send them to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for approval. The Ministries of Petroleum and Finance are teaming up on the proposal, with changes possibly kicking in as soon as September 16.
These fuel price fluctuations in Pakistan have sparked frustration among residents, especially after a big public backlash in July over similar hikes. People accused the government of ignoring the struggles of low-income families during tough economic times.
Take Imran, a local resident venting his anger: “I don’t understand one thing. Petrol prices are going down in international markets, but when they drop, our prices go up.” He pointed out the double whammy in just one month and asked, “Where should the poor people go? They’re raising K-Electric bills, gas prices, and now petrol too.” Imran added that governments worldwide usually lower fuel costs when global prices fall, but Pakistan’s leaders seem to overlook the poor.
