Pakistan Hikes High-Speed Diesel Price Again Amid Public Frustration
Pakistan’s federal government has bumped up the price of high-speed diesel by Rs 2.78 per litre, setting the new rate at Rs 272.77 per litre for the next two weeks. This move comes as fuel prices in Pakistan continue to stir debate among everyday folks struggling with rising costs.
Petrol prices, on the other hand, stay steady at Rs 264.61 per litre—no changes there for now. The announcement follows reports from Dawn News, highlighting how these adjustments hit the wallet of drivers and commuters across the country.
Just a day before, sources told ARY News that the government was mulling bigger hikes: high-speed diesel by Rs 4.79 per litre, kerosene by Rs 3.06 per litre, and light diesel by Rs 3.68 per litre. But the final call toned it down for diesel.
The Ministry of Petroleum, teaming up with the Ministry of Finance, has wrapped up initial calculations on these petroleum product prices. They’ll send a summary to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for his nod. Once approved, the new rates kick in from today, September 16, as per ARY News.
This isn’t the first time fuel prices in Pakistan have sparked outrage. Back in July, people took to the streets after another petrol and diesel price surge. With the economy already squeezed, many accuse the government of ignoring the poor.
Take Imran, a frustrated resident from Islamabad. He shared his woes: "I don’t get it. Petrol prices are dropping in global markets, but here they shoot up. In just one month, petrol has gone up twice. Where do the poor go? They’re hiking K-Electric bills, gas prices, and now petrol—it’s too much."
Imran feels helpless, adding, "The government isn’t thinking about us regular people. Around the world, when international petrol prices fall, local prices follow suit. Why not here in Pakistan?"
As fuel price hikes in Pakistan keep making headlines, citizens hope for relief soon. With global oil trends shifting, eyes are on whether the government will ease the burden on households and transport costs. Stay tuned for updates on petroleum prices and economic news.
