The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, ruled by Pakistan Tehreek‑e‑Insaf (PTI), has decided not to file a no‑confidence motion against its outgoing chief minister, Ali Amin Gandapur. Meanwhile, the governor’s office confirmed that Gandapur submitted his resignation on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
After a meeting in Peshawar with constitutional experts, the KP Assembly Secretariat ruled that the motion could not move forward because the chief minister has already quit. “A no‑confidence motion is useless when the chief minister has stepped down,” the sources said. They warned that the opposition could still challenge any PTI‑filed motion in court.
Gandapur announced his resignation on Wednesday, saying he was following a directive from party founder Imran Khan. He posted on his Facebook account that the “entrusted” role was now being handed back to Khan, and that the chief minister’s position would pass to MPA Sohail Afridi. PTI’s official X account confirmed the change, and secretary general Salman Akram Raja said the decision came directly from Imran Khan.
Khan cited the worsening security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa—highlighting record terror incidents and the tragic loss of life—as the reason he couldn’t wait any longer for Gandapur to serve as chief minister. “There was no other choice than to make a change,” Khan’s spokesperson said.
The resignation comes amid recent unrest within PTI. Earlier this year, disputes erupted between Gandapur and Imran’s sister Aleema Khan, who accused the chief minister of sowing party divisions and even suggested he wanted his brother to help Hijack PTI. Gandapur, in turn, said Aleema’s claims could harm the party’s unity.
Earlier June turbulence also surfaced when the province’s budget passed at midnight without Imran’s approval, sparking criticism from senior PTI figures. Gandapur defended the move, saying any delay might have paved the way for governor rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
With Gandapur out and Afridi set to take over, PTI now faces the challenge of maintaining stability in a province marred by security threats and internal party politics.
