Karachi, Pakistan – Local journalist Muhammad Manaf has spoken out about the daily violence and intimidation that hit reporters across the country. “It’s nothing new,” he told the press, stressing that press freedom in Pakistan is largely a myth.
Manaf said journalists are harassed every day because they expose problems that some people do not want seen. “If we speak up, we get silenced or even killed,” he warned. The story shows a pattern: governments keep promising protection for media workers, but real action never follows.
The lack of accountability and legal safeguards has created a climate of fear in newsrooms nationwide. When a reporter is attacked, the authorities rarely bring the perpetrator to justice. Manaf urged lawmakers to pass a special law that would protect journalists and punish those who target them.
“Journalism keeps society informed and strengthens democracy,” he added. “Yet here, reporters are treated like ordinary citizens rather than champions of truth.”
Press freedom groups note that Pakistan is among the most dangerous places for journalists. Manaf’s remarks serve as a stark reminder: in this country, the pursuit of truth can be a deadly risk.
