Odisha Assembly Monsoon Session Kicks Off with Emotional Tributes to Late Leaders

The Monsoon Session of the Odisha Legislative Assembly started on Thursday in Bhubaneswar, but the day wrapped up early after lawmakers paid heartfelt tributes to several departed leaders. The session, marking the fourth of the 17th Assembly, began with a condolence motion that brought everyone together in remembrance.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi moved the motion to honor former minister and Nuapada MLA Rajendra Dholakia, who passed away on September 8, 2025, at age 69. Majhi remembered him fondly, saying, "He was sweet-spoken, sociable, and always altruistic. Dholakia worked tirelessly for farmers, laborers, Dalits, and the downtrodden." The House also condoled the deaths of former Deputy Speaker and Minister Bibhuti Bhushan Singh Mardaraj, ex-members Prasanna Pattnaik, Karendra Majhi, Niranjan Hembram, Prafulla Kumar Bhanja, and Mohammad Rafique. Tributes extended to fallen members of the Odisha Police and IR Battalion.

Majhi described Mardaraj as a "popular and respected leader" in Odisha politics, highlighting his lasting impact. Deputy Leader of the Opposition Prasanna Acharya and Congress Legislative Party Leader Rama Chandra Kadam joined in, sharing their grief and offering condolences to the families.

Assembly Speaker Surama Padhy took part too, recalling the "good deeds and dedicated service" of these leaders. She promised to pass on the House’s sympathies to their loved ones. The session ended on a solemn note with a silent prayer for the departed souls.

This Odisha Assembly Monsoon Session runs for seven working days and wraps up on September 25. Lawmakers will dive into key debates and bills in the coming days, keeping the focus on state issues.
