Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed a high‑profile delegation from the United States on Tuesday, meeting the group of thinkers and business leaders led by Walter Russell Mead, a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute. Modi praised the visitors for helping deepen India‑US ties and for their support in building a partnership that promotes global peace, progress and prosperity.
After the talks, Modi posted on X, saying he was glad to engage with the U.S. delegation and valued their contribution to strengthening India‑U.S. relations. His tweet echoed the message that the partnership is crucial for a stable and prosperous world.
India’s trade policy toolkit has also been on the domestic agenda. Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal confirmed that the government is in continuous dialogue with the United States about a proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). “We are talking with the U.S. at several levels. We do not bind the talks to strict deadlines; we will see how, where and when we can move forward,” Goyal told reporters from Qatar. He indicated that a BTA could potentially take shape, although no timeline has been set.
Turning the spotlight to Europe, Goyal highlighted active talks with the European Union on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA). “We are having very productive discussions in Brussels. The partnership between the $20 trillion EU and India – the fastest‑growing large economy – is mutually beneficial,” he said. He pointed out that India’s young, skilled workforce complements the EU’s innovation and technology base, creating a win‑win for both sides.
Goyal also previewed next steps: Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agarwal will travel to Brussels by the end of the week to meet the EU trade officials and discuss how to conclude a fair and balanced FTA once the current round of negotiations ends.
In addition to trans‑Atlantic ties, the minister noted India’s growing cooperation with Qatar on third‑country projects. Qatar’s development bank is willing to guarantee financing for joint ventures, offering Indian businesses a new channel to expand globally.
Overall, the day underscored India’s active pursuit of strategic trade partnerships with the United States, the European Union, and the Gulf region, as the government seeks to secure open markets, promote growth, and contribute to global stability.
