Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump had a friendly phone call on Thursday. Modi congratulated Trump on the first‑stage Gaza peace plan, which both leaders say will free all hostages soon and set the stage for lasting peace in the region.
During the call, the two leaders also reaffirmed their progress in trade talks. Modi said India and the U.S. will keep the lines of communication open in the coming weeks as they move forward with a new Bilateral Trade Agreement. The U.S. has recently imposed a 50 % tariff on many Indian products and a 25 % penalty on Russian oil imports, which is a key point in the trade negotiations.
India has already taken steps to deepen economic ties with Washington. A U.S. trade team headed to India on September 16 had productive discussions, and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal led a delegation to the United States on September 22 to push the deal toward a quick conclusion.
Modi celebrated the Gaza agreement, noting how it reflects Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s strong leadership. He hoped that the upcoming release of hostages and increased humanitarian aid would ease suffering in Gaza and lead to a durable peace.
Trump highlighted the historic moment on his Truth Social feed, thanking the mediators from Qatar, Egypt and Turkey. He described the agreement as a “great day” for the Arab‑Muslim world, Israel, neighboring countries and the United States.
The two leaders’ conversation underscores a growing partnership between India and the U.S. on trade and regional security. Both sides remain committed to advancing the bilateral trade deal while supporting a peaceful resolution in the Middle East.
