Protests in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir enter Day 5

Protests in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) raged on their fifth day Thursday, as huge crowds marched from Rawalakot toward the capital, Muzaffarabad. Supporters of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan jumped in by sharing dramatic videos of the unrest on social media, highlighting the growing anger against the government.

Syeda Zahr, a leader from Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, posted footage of the massive turnout and captioned it: “Latest from Kashmir. A sea of people from Rawalakot has set out towards Muzaffarabad.” Another PTI aide, Muddsar, shared clips of demonstrators chanting anti-government slogans and wrote: “Salam to the people of Kashmir who know how to claim their rights. The mothers of Kashmir have truly given birth to brave children.”

The demonstrations kicked off peacefully but turned violent in Muzaffarabad, where Pakistani security forces fired on crowds pushing for a “Self-Rule Charter of Demands.” Sources report at least six deaths and multiple serious injuries over the past three days. Protesters, organized by the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JKJAAC), have shut down shops, businesses, and transport across several PoJK districts, showing deep frustration with how Islamabad is handling the crisis.

It all started last week when the JKJAAC led massive rallies around a 38-point list of demands. Frustrated locals want the government to scrap 12 reserved legislative seats for Kashmiri refugees in Pakistan, cut sky-high electricity bills, offer cheap wheat flour, and end special perks for officials. They’re also calling for free education and healthcare to ease daily struggles in PoJK.

The administration hit back hard, slapping an indefinite lockdown on the region and cutting off internet access to curb the spread of information. But that hasn’t stopped the momentum. Clashes between police and protesters have erupted in various spots, and demonstrators have smashed through roadblocks to reach Muzaffarabad.

In Dudyal, Mirpur, the Action Committee made a bold stand: They refused to bury the body of a slain protester until officials meet their demands. Meanwhile, security forces worked to clear bridges and halt the advancing marches, cranking up the tension in this volatile PoJK standoff.
