South Korea’s foreign ministry in Seoul announced that it had formally summoned Vietnam’s ambassador to the country for a meeting. The summons followed a series of complaints that the Vietnamese envoy was involved in sexual misconduct while in South Korea.
According to the South Korean government, officials received reports that the ambassador was responsible for a sexual assault that reportedly took place in a Seoul‑based venue. The victims, who remain anonymous, said the incident occurred several weeks ago, and they pressed the South Korean authorities for action.
In a statement, the ministry said it was “deeply concerned” about the allegations and wanted the Vietnamese envoy to explain his side of the story. It also reported that the ambassador is expected to appear at the ministry’s office on Tuesday.
Vietnam’s foreign ministry issued a brief response. It denied the allegations and said the ambassador had “no involvement” in any wrongdoing. The statement added that Vietnam would “upload a full investigation” into the claims and that the ambassador would maintain his diplomatic duties unless proven guilty.
The incident comes at a time when diplomatic relations between the two Southeast Asian countries are under review. Analysts say that the Seoul summons could prompt a broader inquiry into Vietnam’s diplomatic conduct abroad and test the ties between South Korea and Vietnam.
South Korean officials have said that they will continue to review the case and take appropriate steps if the accusations hold up. Meanwhile, Vietnam has urged its diplomats to conduct themselves in line with international standards, adding that the alleged misconduct does not reflect the nation’s values.
