Nepal’s Jailbreak Drama: 75 Inmates Caught Crossing into India Amid Protests
India’s border guards have made a big catch along the India-Nepal frontier. The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), a key force under the Ministry of Home Affairs, arrested 75 escaped inmates trying to slip into India from Nepal. These fugitives fled Nepalese jails during the recent unrest sparked by youth-led protests in the Himalayan nation.
SSB officials say they’ve nabbed these escapees at various checkpoints along the 1,751-km open border that stretches across five Indian states: Sikkim, West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. The force, which also secures the 699-km border with Bhutan, ramped up vigilance after Gen Z protests turned violent, leading to jailbreaks.
Meanwhile, Nepal is breathing a sigh of relief as things calm down. The nationwide curfew ended on Saturday, just a day after former Chief Justice Sushila Karki took oath as the interim Prime Minister. According to The Himalayan Times, the Nepalese Army didn’t extend the curfew, which was set to last until 6 am Sunday.
Life is getting back to normal fast. Public transport kicked off again this morning in Kathmandu, and long-distance buses are now rolling out to cities across the country. It’s a welcome change after days of chaos from the anti-corruption protests.
The political shake-up started with the dissolution of Nepal’s Parliament late Friday. Fresh elections are now set for March 5, 2026. This move came hours after Karki’s swearing-in, approved in her first cabinet meeting at 11 pm. Her six-month transitional government will focus on restoring order and gearing up for the polls.
Karki made history as Nepal’s first woman Prime Minister. She took the oath at Sheetal Niwas, the presidential residence in Kathmandu. Her rise followed the resignation of KP Sharma Oli earlier this week, triggered by weeks of youth protests demanding accountability.
Interestingly, Karki’s selection shows rare unity in Nepal’s divided politics. Gen Z leaders picked her through a public vote on Discord, and she won big support from both young activists and old-guard politicians craving stability during this turbulent time.
With borders on high alert and Nepal stabilizing, the India-Nepal border security remains a hot topic. SSB’s quick action highlights their role in tackling cross-border threats amid regional unrest.
