Former Indian Ambassador to Nepal, Jayant Prasad, has hailed Sushila Karki’s appointment as interim Prime Minister as a timely boost for Nepal’s shaky politics. In an exclusive chat with , Prasad called her an independent and fair leader who could bring much-needed stability and push for fair elections—unlike the endless delays in Bangladesh.

“Nepal was crying out for a steady hand,” Prasad told . “This is great news because Sushila Karki is known for her independence and fairness. She’ll make sure elections happen, not like in Bangladesh where they’ve had a caretaker government for over a year without any polls. I’m confident she’ll handle the next ones smoothly.”

Prasad drew parallels to Nepal’s past, pointing to 2013 when the Chief Justice stepped in after a political agreement and successfully ran the elections. “Back then, the Chief Justice took charge with everyone’s agreement and got the job done,” he said.

With Nepal’s Parliament dissolved and fresh polls set for March 5, 2026, Prasad believes Karki’s leadership will rebuild trust in the system. “It’s a tough spot right now, but her stepping in will definitely calm things down,” he added.

Karki, Nepal’s first woman Chief Justice, took oath on Friday to lead a six-month interim government. This comes after violent anti-corruption protests toppled the previous regime. In her first cabinet meeting at 11 pm, she approved the Parliament’s dissolution, kicking off the transition to elections.

The President’s office confirmed: “Honourable President Shri Ram Chandra Poudel, on the recommendation of Honourable Prime Minister Shri Sushila Karki, has dissolved the current House of Representatives effective 11:00 PM on Friday, Bhadra 27, 2082 BS. The new House elections are fixed for Thursday, Falgun 21, 2082 BS (March 5, 2026).”

This move signals hope for Nepal’s political stability amid ongoing challenges.
