Taiwan denounces Chinese defence minister’s remarks, reasserts sovereignty and democracy

Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has strongly pushed back against recent comments from Chinese Defence Minister Dong Jun. At the Beijing Xiangshan Forum, Dong claimed that Taiwan is simply part of China. The ministry called these statements outright lies that twist history, reveal Beijing’s authoritarian ways, and lean on military threats to bully the island, according to Taiwan News.

The ministry explained that after World War II, the Treaty of San Francisco set the key international rules for the region. This treaty overrode old wartime pacts like the Cairo Declaration and Potsdam Proclamation. Importantly, it never handed Taiwan over to the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Beijing has also never ruled the island, the officials stressed.

Taiwan’s leaders highlighted the island’s proud democratic journey. In the 1980s, Taiwan shifted toward political openness, leading to its first direct presidential election in 1996. Ever since, the people of Taiwan have directly elected their president and lawmakers. This has made the Republic of China (Taiwan) the true, legitimate government that runs things at home and speaks for the island on the world stage.

These free elections have only boosted Taiwan’s political strength, sense of community, and deep dedication to freedom and democracy. The ministry made it clear: the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the People’s Republic of China stand as two separate, equal entities. One doesn’t boss the other around.

Taiwan’s officials also slammed Beijing for “lawfare”—twisting laws and history to paint Taiwan as just an internal Chinese matter. They warned that these moves aim to justify aggression, shake up the status quo in the Taiwan Strait, and threaten peace and security in the region.

Looking ahead, Taiwan vows to team up with democratic allies worldwide. The goal? Keep things stable, fight back against China’s false stories, and protect prosperity in the Indo-Pacific. The government promises to stay a solid player in the global community, defending its sovereignty, democracy, and regional peace, as Taiwan News reported.
