Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense (MND) confirmed that Chinese military aircraft and ships were very close to Taiwan’s territorial waters this week. On Saturday, by 6 a.m. local time, MND detected seven sorties of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft, eight vessels from the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) and one “official” ship operating around Taiwan. Three of the aircraft crossed the median line and entered Taiwan’s north‑western and southwestern air defense identification zones (ADIZ), the ministry said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
The MND also reported that on Friday, 8 aircraft and 9 PLAN vessels were monitored. Four of those flights crossed the median line into Taiwan’s northern, southwestern and southeastern ADIZ.
MND’s posts included a brief graphic showing the flies’ routes and the aircraft’s estimated positions. The ministry said it had tracked the movements and responded, but offered no details on any defensive actions taken.
In related news, a Taiwanese defence analyst, Alexander Huang of Tamkang University, challenged a claim made by China affairs expert Willy Lam that China could block Taiwan’s sea lanes using only a handful of submarines. Dr. Huang pointed out that even nuclear‑powered subs have limits: crews need rest, food and fuel, and they cannot stay submerged forever. He warned that a blockade would expose the submarines to high risk and could easily be contested by foreign warships. Taiwan, he noted, has the means to counter such a move.
These developments suggest continued tension in the Taiwan Strait. The MND’s open‑air alerts and the debate over naval blockade strategies underline the ongoing security concerns for the island and its allies.
