Taiwan’s defense ministry spotted fresh Chinese military moves near its waters early Friday. As of 6 a.m. local time, officials detected 11 People’s Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft, seven People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) vessels, and one official Chinese ship buzzing around the island.
Out of those 11 aircraft, nine crossed the median line in the Taiwan Strait and flew into Taiwan’s northern Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ). The ministry says it kept a close watch and took the necessary steps to respond.
This comes right after similar activity on Thursday. Taiwan tracked one PLA aircraft and five PLAN vessels around the same time that day. That single plane also entered the northern ADIZ.
These close encounters highlight the ongoing tensions between Taiwan and China. Beijing views Taiwan as part of its territory and pushes for reunification, sometimes through military shows of force like these incursions. Taiwan, meanwhile, runs its own government and sees itself as independent, with strong backing from its people.
The roots of this standoff go back to 1949, after China’s civil war. When communist forces took over the mainland, Taiwan’s government retreated there and set up its own system. China has kept up the pressure ever since, using everything from warships and jets to diplomatic moves.
Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense shares these updates regularly on social media to stay transparent and alert the public. With cross-strait relations on edge, eyes around the world stay glued to these developments.
