Taiwan reports Chinese aircraft, five naval vessels near its waters

Taiwan’s defense ministry spotted one Chinese military vessel and five naval ships near its waters early Thursday morning, highlighting ongoing tensions in the region.

As of 6 a.m. local time, the ministry detected one sortie of People’s Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft, with that single flight entering Taiwan’s northern Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ). In a post on X, formerly Twitter, the Ministry of National Defense (MND) shared: “1 sortie of PLA aircraft and 5 PLAN vessels operating around Taiwan were detected up until 6 a.m. (UTC+8) today. 1 out of 1 sorties entered Taiwan’s northern ADIZ. #ROCArmedForces have monitored the situation and responded.”

This comes right after a quieter Wednesday, when Taiwan tracked just one Chinese naval vessel in its surrounding waters at the same early hour. The MND’s X update noted: “1 PLAN vessel operating around #Taiwan was detected up until 6 a.m. (UTC+8) today. #ROCArmedForces have monitored the situation and responded.” No PLA aircraft showed up that day, so there was no flight path to illustrate.

These regular Chinese military moves underscore the growing strain between Taiwan and China. Taiwan, formally the Republic of China (ROC), runs its own government, economy, and military with strong local backing. But Beijing sees Taiwan as a breakaway province and pushes the “One China” principle, claiming the island belongs to mainland China, with its capital in Beijing.

The roots of this dispute go back to 1949, at the end of China’s civil war. Back then, the ROC government retreated to Taiwan after Mao Zedong’s Communist forces seized control of the mainland. Since those days, China has ramped up pressure through military drills, diplomatic isolation, and economic leverage to push for reunification. Taiwan, though, stands firm on its de facto independence and sovereignty, even as it faces these challenges.

The MND keeps a close watch on these incursions and shares updates publicly to boost transparency and alert the public to national security issues. With Taiwan Strait tensions on the rise, both sides continue to navigate this complex geopolitical standoff.
