Taiwan’s president Lai Ching‑te told the nation on Friday that Taiwan will build a new multi‑layered air‑defence system called T‑Dome. The goal is to create a safety net against growing military threats from China, reporters said.
In his National Day speech on Double Ten Day, Lai promised to speed up the T‑Dome build‑out. “We will set up a strict air‑defence system with many layers, high‑level detection and effective interception,” he said, adding that the new network will protect citizens’ lives and property.
The president also called on China to stop using force to try to take Taiwan. “The world must remember the lessons of World War II so history’s tragedies never repeat,” Lai warned. “Authoritarianism keeps pushing the international order harder, and the security of the Taiwan Strait, the East China Sea and the South China Sea is in serious trouble.”
Taiwan recently launched its newest air‑defence missile at the Chiang‑Kong arms show in Taipei. The new system will be part of the broader T‑Dome plan.
Lai also reaffirmed the administration’s pledge to raise defence spending to 3 % of GDP next year and 5 % by 2030. “Beyond the Russia‑Ukraine war and Middle East turmoil, China’s expanding military shows why we must strengthen our defence,” he added.
In a related move, U.S. Senator James Risch, the top Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, introduced a bill called the “Deter PRC Aggression Against Taiwan Act.” The legislation would create a China Sanctions Task Force, led by the Departments of State and Treasury. The task force would spot Chinese military and civilian targets and impose sanctions or export restrictions if China ever used force against Taiwan.
The bill aims to give the U.S. and its allies a way to pressure China before any invasion or sabotage attempt. The new sanctions framework reflects growing international support for Taiwan’s security.
