New Delhi, India – a former Indian minister, MJ Akbar, said that Pakistan’s recent attack on Afghanistan could spark a chain reaction that might even split the country.
He said the violence could be “the starting point of Pakistan’s destruction.”
Akbar warned that the country already faces deep internal divisions. He highlighted that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region has long pushed for independence. The Balochistan war for self‑governance has also been a constant source of tension.
The former minister linked Pakistan’s instability to its handling of domestic dissent and tough foreign‑policy decisions. He noted that Pakistan’s relationship with China and the United States is strained. China’s pause on funding the Main Line‑1 (ML‑1) railway project, part of the China‑Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), illustrates the cost of corruption and mismanagement.
“It feels like Pakistan is trying to fool America with fake promises, while China refuses to fund the railway because of corruption and wastage,” Akbar said. He added that the country might now turn to the Asian Development Bank for a $2 billion loan to upgrade the Karachi‑Rohri section of ML‑1.
The attack on Afghanistan, which sparked explosions in Kabul’s capital on Thursday, has forced Afghan officials to confront the Iranian‑border tensions that resemble a “ringmaster of lies.” Akbar described the event as a bluff that back‑fired, exposing Pakistan’s tactics and moral weakness.
He also talked about rising protests among Pakistan’s young generation. “Gen Z in Pakistan is demanding systemic change, not just a new regime,” he said, drawing a comparison to movements in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, the Philippines and Nepal.
Overall, Akbar painted a picture of a country in crisis—internal divisions, economic shakedowns, and a foreign‑policy strategy that, if not changed, could lead to a further breakdown of Pakistan’s unity.
