Dhaka – In a sweep that rattled the capital, police arrested eight senior Awami League leaders and activists on Sunday. The arrests spread across Dhaka’s key neighbourhoods, including Dhanmondi, Bhashantek, Moghbazar, Wari, Jatrabari, Tejgaon and Gulshan.
Among those taken into custody are Enamul Kabir Emon, a 51‑year‑old central committee member; Emdadul Haque, the Dhaka South unit secretary; Mosharraf Hossain, 38, vice‑president of the Banani thana Tanti League; Kazi Miraz Hossain Moni, 30, joint general secretary of the Dhaka South unit BCL; Belal Ahmed Nahian (Biplab), 32; Shahanur Alam Sabu, president of the Jourpurhat Amdai union unit; Nure Alam Liton, 37, organising secretary of the Motijheel Thana Jubo League; and Aminul Haque Murad, 45, vice‑president of the Chawkbazar unit.
Deputy Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Talebur Rehman, said detectives worked around the clock, acting on a tip‑off that led them to Enamul at 1:05 a.m. The team also booked the other suspects across the city.
These arrests come while the interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, tightens its grip on opposition figures. On Sunday, Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam announced that the International Crimes Tribunal would begin a primary investigation targeting the Awami League for alleged crimes against humanity. He told reporters that the probe would determine whether the party can be held accountable as a criminal organization.
Earlier in September, the Awami League condemned widespread arrests, violence, and abuses under Yunus’s regime. The party’s statement described a nation plunged into “horror, brutality, and mob rule,” citing daily incidents of murder, rape, looting, and arson.
The crackdown signals a sharp escalation in the political battle in Bangladesh, as the Awami League faces growing pressure from law‑enforcement and judicial bodies.
