The UK’s carrier strike group, commanded by HMS Prince of Wales, started Exercise Konkan with the Indian Navy on the western coast of India. The drill kicked off on October 5 and continues through October 12, with the navy’s own aircraft carrier INS Vikrant leading the Indian fleet.
According to the UK Defence Adviser posted on X, the exercise will finish with a port visit to Mumbai and another to Goa. The same post highlighted that the UK carrier group’s arrival brings “new energy” to the long‑running collaboration.
The Indian Navy said that Exercise Konkan 2025 reaffirms a shared commitment to keeping seas secure, open and free. It also strengthens the comprehensive strategic partnership that underpins the India‑UK Vision 2035. The two‑phase naval drill includes harboured activities like joint sports matches, cross‑deck visits and cultural exchanges, as well as professional meetings between officers.
The sea phase will feature joint anti‑air, anti‑surface and anti‑submarine operations, along with air‑borne and seamanship drills. Both sides will deploy frontline assets, including aircraft carriers, destroyers, frigates, submarines, and air‑field support. The UK group, which also includes ships from Norway and Japan, adds an international dimension to the exercise.
All activity will take place in the Western Indian Ocean, underscoring the growing cooperation between the Royal Navy and the Indian Navy. The visits to Mumbai and Goa are expected to further cement maritime ties and showcase joint capabilities to the continent’s growing naval community.
