Ukrainian President thanks Japan, UK for renewed sanctions against Russia

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed his gratitude to the UK and Japan for their latest sanctions targeting Russia’s military-industrial complex. These moves aim to weaken Moscow’s war machine amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Zelenskyy shared his thanks in a post on X, highlighting Japan’s strong steps. “We value Japan’s decisive actions in ramping up pressure on Russia,” he wrote. Japan recently joined an international effort to cap the price of Russian oil at $47.60 per barrel. This oil price cap on Russia is expected to seriously dent the Kremlin’s finances and limit funding for its invasion of Ukraine.

He also praised the UK for announcing a fresh sanctions package right in Kyiv. “I thank the United Kingdom for the new sanctions package,” Zelenskyy added. The package targets 100 items in total, delivering a major blow to Russia’s shadow fleet and military supply chains. It includes sanctions on 70 tankers, 27 companies that produce and supply weapons for Russia’s military-industrial complex—such as those making Iskander missiles—and three key individuals.

Meanwhile, the European Union has extended its own sanctions for another six months. These EU sanctions against Russia cover more than 2,500 individuals and entities accused of supporting Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and threatening its sovereignty and territorial integrity. The EU blacklist features high-profile names like Russian President Vladimir Putin, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, top generals, oligarchs, business leaders, lawmakers, propagandists, and mercenaries. It even includes those involved in the abduction of Ukrainian children from occupied areas—a serious war crime that has led to an international arrest warrant for Putin.

EU ambassadors made this decision during a meeting in Brussels on Friday, as confirmed by the Danish presidency of the EU Council. While Hungary and Slovakia pushed to remove some names from the Russia sanctions list, discussions ended with no political exemptions. A few entries were dropped only for technical reasons.

These coordinated international sanctions on Russia underscore growing global efforts to isolate Moscow and support Ukraine’s fight for its territorial integrity.
