Sergio Gor has landed in New Delhi as the United States’ newest ambassador to India, and his arrival signals a fresh push for closer ties between the two powers. The former US envoy, who was confirmed in September, is expected to deepen cooperation in defense, trade, technology and critical minerals—areas that have attracted growing attention from both Washington and New Delhi.
At the first meeting of his tour, Gor sat down with India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, and later with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. The three leaders talked about a wide range of shared priorities, from strengthening the “Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership” to ensuring that critical minerals—such as lithium and cobalt—remain a key part of the future economy.
Gor also met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The conversation covered defense trade, technology collaboration and the importance of mutual engagement in the Indo‑Pacific. “We hit the ground running,” Gor told reporters. “The U.S. values its relationship with India, and I look forward to deepening it further.”
The ambassador-designate reassured that both leaders see each other as close friends. He echoed the sentiment that President Donald Trump has a strong personal bond with Modi, a factor that will help keep U.S.–India talks productive in the months ahead.
The U.S. Embassy in New Delhi issued a tweet welcoming Gor and praised the enthusiasm of his meetings. The Embassy said the ambassador will work with Indian counterparts to pursue a safer, stronger, and more prosperous partnership. A tweet from India’s Ministry of External Affairs also highlighted the warm reception provided by Foreign Secretary Misri, who called the talks “productive.”
In earlier remarks at a Senate hearing, Gor emphasized that India’s geographic position, economic growth and military capability make it a regional stabilizer and a critical ally for U.S. security interests. He pledged to expand defense and security cooperation once confirmed.
Gor’s visit follows a period of trade tensions during the Trump administration. Yet his appointment underscores Washington’s commitment to an enduring U.S.–India strategic partnership. The State Department noted that Gor will travel from October 9‑14 and will meet with senior Indian officials to discuss a broad range of bilateral issues, reaffirming that the Indo‑Pacific will remain “safe, strong and prosperous.”
The U.S. Embassy confirmed that the formal presentation of credentials will take place later, with the exact date yet to be announced. The embassy remains confident that this new chapter will bring fresh momentum to the U.S.–India relationship.
