Mauritius PM Ramgoolam Visits Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Strengthens India Ties
Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam kicked off his India visit with a heartfelt stop at the iconic Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) called it a shining example of the strong cultural and civilisational bonds between India and Mauritius.
In a lively post on X right after the visit, the MEA highlighted how this trip to the sacred site reinforces the historic connections that link the two countries. Ramgoolam, who offered prayers at the Lord Shiva shrine, truly embodied that shared heritage.
This marks Ramgoolam’s first official bilateral visit to India since taking office, running from September 9 to 16. He arrived in Varanasi on Wednesday and wasted no time diving into key activities.
On Thursday, he met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a packed bilateral meeting. The two leaders chatted about boosting ties in areas like infrastructure, healthcare, digital technology, energy, and maritime security. They also tackled regional and global challenges head-on.
The talks led to some exciting outcomes. India announced a massive Special Economic Package worth over USD 680 million to support Mauritius’s development. Plus, they inked seven Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) covering science and technology, oceanography, public administration, power, small development projects, hydrography, and space cooperation.
Standout deals include a fresh push for space collaboration—setting up telemetry, tracking, and communication stations—and renewed efforts in maritime research and hydrographic mapping.
Ramgoolam’s India itinerary isn’t over yet. Later today, he’ll head to Ayodhya to visit the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple, adding another layer to this meaningful journey.
These steps show how India and Mauritius are building an even stronger strategic partnership, one rooted in shared history and future goals.
